Origin:
The European Doberman and American Doberman have the same origin; bred in Germany during the year 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann (a tax collector). Louis Dobermann created the breed as a protection/guard dog to keep him safe while collecting taxes.
Appearance:
The European Doberman has a muscular thick body that is built for work and protective services. They have more muscle mass and a thicker neck, head, and chest compared to the American doberman. The only colors recognized (breed standard) for the European Doberman is black/rust & red/rust.
The doberman natually has a short, single layer coat and an overall low tolerance to cold weather. This is why the breed is not suited to live outside, please choose a different breed if that is what you are looking for. A Doberman is happiest when with his/her family, this is why they are also called "velcro dogs".
